  • A painted finish can add beauty to a tacky vinyl floor. If you try to paint vinyl flooring without prepping it, peeling will follow. Many amateurs don't know how to paint vinyl flooring and are confused when the vinyl flooring shed's paint. Avoid finish failure by prepping and painting vinyl flooring, using the correct techniques.

    Step 1

    Dirty vinyl flooring will reject primer. Clean vinyl flooring to prevent adhesion problems.

    Step 2

    Primer won't stick to smooth vinyl flooring. Scour the vinyl flooring with sandpaper.

    Step 3

    Protect areas adjacent to your vinyl flooring, using tape. Protect areas underneath the vinyl flooring, using canvas drop cloths.

    Step 4

    Coat your vinyl flooring with acrylic primer. Prime over the vinyl flooring, using a polyester brush and roller. Let your vinyl flooring dry two full hours.

    Step 5

    Coat your vinyl flooring with acrylic floor paint. Paint over the vinyl flooring, using a polyester brush and roller. Let your vinyl flooring dry two full hours.

    Cautions

    Never prime over vinyl flooring unless you've sanded it.

    Never paint over vinyl flooring unless you've primed it.
