  • Frugal do-it-yourselfers know they can beautify their vinyl tile by adding a painted finish. If you try to paint vinyl tile without prepping it, peeling will follow. Many amateurs don't know how to paint vinyl tile and are confused when the vinyl tile shed's paint. Avoid finish failure by prepping and painting vinyl tile, using the correct techniques.

    Step 1

    Dirty vinyl tile will reject primer. Clean vinyl tile to prevent adhesion problems.

    Step 2

    Primer won't stick to smooth vinyl tile. Scour the vinyl tile with sandpaper.

    Step 3

    Protect areas adjacent to your vinyl tile, using tape. Protect areas underneath the vinyl tile, using canvas drop cloths.

    Step 4

    Coat your vinyl tile with latex primer. Prime over the vinyl tile, using a polyester brush and roller. Let your vinyl tile dry two full hours.

    Step 5

    Coat your vinyl tile with latex or acrylic floor paint. Paint over the vinyl tile, using a polyester brush and roller. Let your vinyl tile dry two full hours.

    Cautions

    Never prime over vinyl tile unless you've sanded it.

    Never paint over vinyl tile unless you've primed it.
